Student Advisory Council / Leadership

In collaboration with the prom committee and the Leadership class, your Assumption SAC hosted a dodgeball buyout during the fourth period. The seniors claimed victory against the teachers thanks to a winning shot by our own Reni Babs-Olorunfemi. We thank everyone who donated and participated!

Additionally, we’re planning your Easter spirit week, taking place from April 10th to April 14th. Make sure to keep your eyes peeled for more details regarding the spirit week Raiders!

Model UN

Hello Raiders! It has now been about three weeks since Assumption’s Model UN Club made its journey to compete in the CAPMUN Model UN Tournament in Ottawa. Firstly, all members would like to thank and express our gratitude to Mrs. Brunone and Mr. Salton for chaperoning the trip and helping make it a fun experience for all of us. We would also like to thank Mrs. Brunone’s daughter, Alaina for inviting us to come and attend this amazing event. Our days were packed with exciting activities.

Our 16-member team made their way from Windsor to Ottawa by train through 10 hours of travel. While in Ottawa, we had the great pleasure of visiting both major buildings of Canada’s legislative branch; the Parliament and the Senate. We also had the amazing opportunity of listening to the insights of 3 foreign ambassadors talk about real issues affecting our world today, representing the countries of France, Morocco, and The Netherlands.

Assumption participated in 3 committees; the Chinese Civil War, LGBTQ+IA Healthcare, and Moon Colonization. Assumption’s performance in all three committees were impressive, especially considering that this was their first time participating in Model UN. Overall, Assumption did great, winning the Best Largest Delegation Award! Three of our delegates performed exceptionally well winning individual awards and all deserve a shoutout; Mara Ifteni received the Book Award for her great position paper and the exemplary teamwork she was able to demonstrate, and both Sohila Sidhu and Yutong Wang won the outstanding delegate award for their phenomenal abilities to adapt and overcome to the changing situations that were presented to them. Great job guys!

It should also be worthy to mention that anyone who may be interested in participating in a Model UN tournament, another one will be taking place on May 26th in Leamington. If you are interested please stay after school on Wednesday, March 29th in Mr. Sobol’s room for details.

Raider Care Club

"It is during our darkest moments that we must focus to see the light." - Aristotle

Mental health awareness is crucial for promoting wellbeing. However, it is not only about awareness; it's also about providing support to those who need it. With the COVID-19 pandemic continuing to impact people's lives, the need for mental health support has become more urgent than ever. Fortunately, many organizations and advocacy groups are working to raise awareness and provide resources to support people's mental health. At Raiders Care meetings, we often discuss smart ways to avoid anxious thoughts. This week, set a goal for yourself to stay in-tune with your mental health and remain conscious of minimizing the stressors within your life.

Putin to Move Nuclear Weapons From Moscow to Belarus

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko (left) meets with Russian leader Vladimir Putin (right)

Saturday, March 25th, 2023: Vladimir Putin, the president of the Russian Federation has declared that nuclear weapons will be moved into Belarusian soil. The type of weapon and the amount remains unknown, but Putin says that a storage facility has already been constructed for them. U.S. intelligence predicts around 2000 tactical nuclear weapons, meaning the inclusion of bombs that can be carried by tactical aircraft, warheads for short-range missiles, and artillery rounds. It is also worth noting that these weapons will still remain in the control of Moscow. On Saturday night, Putin said,“We are doing what “they” (referring to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization), have been doing for decades; stationing them in certain allied countries, preparing the launch platforms and training their crews.” He next said that with Belarus specifically, “We are going to do the same thing.”

Tornadoes in Alabama & Mississippi Leave At Least 26 Dead

Alabama & Mississippi

At least 12 tornadoes have hit the deep South of the States leaving 26 dead, hundreds injured, and many more without power. In the small Mississippi town of Rolling Fork, home to about 2000, at least 13 people were killed, and just about the entire town was levelled. Mayor Eldridge Walker said that their “town is gone,” Mississippi governor Tate Reeves declared a state of emergency, and president Joe Biden says “The images from across Mississippi are heartbreaking.”
